Where to Live During Residency in Shreveport, Louisiana

Moving to Shreveport for residency or fellowship? Start planning where you'll live before you arrive. Compare neighborhoods near LSU Health Shreveport, think through your commute and housing options, and begin narrowing down the areas that make sense for your schedule, budget and lifestyle.

If you're moving to Shreveport for medical residency, one of your first big decisions is where you're going to live.

And during residency, location can matter a lot.

Your commute, rotation sites, budget, housing preferences and how long you expect to stay in Shreveport can all influence whether you choose to live close to the medical district, farther into South Shreveport, or even across the river in Bossier City.

The good news?

You have options.

As a local REALTOR® serving Shreveport, Bossier City and communities throughout Louisiana, I help relocating buyers understand those options and narrow their search before spending days scrolling through properties that may not actually fit their move.

You don't need to know exactly where you want to live yet.

That's what this guide is for.

Where Should You Live During Residency in Shreveport?

There isn't one “best” neighborhood for every medical resident. Different areas offer different combinations of proximity to the medical district, housing style, price, amenities and access to other parts of Shreveport.

Your specific rotation locations should always be considered, but here are several areas worth exploring as you begin your search.

❋ South Highlands

South Highlands is one of the first areas worth considering if proximity to the Kings Highway medical corridor is important to you.

The area is known for established residential streets, older homes with architectural character, apartments and convenient access to Line Avenue and central Shreveport.

For a resident who wants to stay relatively close to LSU Health while still having a neighborhood feel, South Highlands may be a strong place to begin looking. Bossier offers everything from established neighborhoods to gated communities and newer construction.

North and South Bossier can also feel very different, which is why I recommend comparing actual properties, commute routes and daily-life priorities rather than simply searching “homes in Bossier City.”

❋ Highland

If being very close to the LSU Health medical corridor is one of your highest priorities, Highland is another area worth exploring.

Housing here varies considerably and includes historic homes, apartments, duplexes and other older properties. Because properties and streets can differ, this is an area where I recommend evaluating your options individually rather than choosing based solely on the neighborhood name.

For some residents, the major advantage is simple: proximity.

❋ Broadmoor

Broadmoor gives you another central Shreveport option while moving farther away from the immediate medical district.

The neighborhood contains primarily established housing and offers convenient access to major roads, shopping, restaurants and other parts of the city.

For residents who may rotate through multiple medical facilities around Shreveport, its central location can make it worth considering.

❋ Spring Lake | Southeast Shreveport

If you prefer a more residential setting and don't mind increasing your commute, expand your search into Spring Lake and other parts of southeast Shreveport.

This puts you closer to the Youree Drive and East 70th Street corridors, with convenient access to shopping, restaurants and everyday services.

The tradeoff is distance from the main LSU Health campus—which is why I recommend comparing the actual commute against what you're gaining in the home and location.

Should You Rent or Buy During Residency?

This is one of the first questions I would answer before seriously searching for housing.

Buying isn't automatically the better choice simply because you'll be in Shreveport for several years—and renting isn't automatically the safer choice either.

Your expected residency length, available cash, financing options, monthly payment, maintenance responsibilities and plans after residency should all be considered.

If you're considering purchasing, we can compare what ownership may realistically cost against the rental options you're considering.

The goal isn't to convince you to buy.

It's to determine which option makes the most sense for your situation.

Considering buying during residency?

Tell me how long you expect to be in Shreveport and what you're considering. I can help you begin looking at the housing side of the equation and connect you with a lender if you need financing information.

What About Physician Mortgage Loans?

If you're an incoming physician considering buying, a physician mortgage program may be one of the financing options worth exploring.

Programs vary by lender, and a physician loan isn't automatically the best financing option for every buyer.

Before seriously shopping for homes, I recommend speaking with a lender familiar with physician borrowers and comparing the available programs against conventional financing.

Getting your financing organized early can help establish a comfortable purchasing range before you begin seriously shopping.

Don't have a lender yet?

That's okay. You can still reach out and begin planning your move.

How Close Should You Live to the Hospital?

There isn't one perfect commute.

I recommend thinking about your commute from the perspective of your hardest workday, not your easiest one.

After a long shift or overnight call, how much driving are you realistically going to want to do?

Some residents may prioritize living as close as possible to their primary training location. Others may be willing to drive farther for a particular home, neighborhood, additional space or household need.

Your specialty matters too.

If your rotations take you to multiple medical facilities throughout Shreveport, a centrally located home may make more sense than simply choosing the property closest to one hospital.

Before choosing a home, map the actual properties you're considering against the locations where you'll spend the most time.

Moving to Shreveport From Another State?

You don't necessarily need to make multiple trips to Louisiana just to begin your housing search.

Depending on your situation, I can help you research properties remotely, communicate with listing agents and builders, provide video walkthroughs when appropriate and help you understand what you're looking at beyond listing photographs.

We can also compare properties based on your actual hospital and rotation locations so you're not simply guessing at Shreveport geography from Google Maps.

The goal is simple:

Arrive in Shreveport already understanding your options—not starting from zero.

Not Sure Where to Start?

That's completely fine.

You don't need to know which neighborhood you want, which side of the river makes sense or exactly what your next home should look like before reaching out.

That's what we'll figure out.
