Moving to Shreveport-Bossier, Louisiana
Moving to Shreveport or Bossier City? Start understanding the area before you arrive. Compare communities, housing options, commute considerations and the different lifestyles available throughout Shreveport-Bossier and Northwest Louisiana.
If you're relocating to Shreveport-Bossier, one of your first big questions is probably:
Where should I live?
And the answer isn't automatically Shreveport, Bossier City, North Bossier or any one particular neighborhood.
Your workplace, budget, preferred commute, housing style and what you actually want your everyday life to look like should all influence that decision.
The good news?
You have options.
From established Shreveport neighborhoods and newer Bossier subdivisions to gated communities, golf-course homes, acreage and waterfront property, this area offers much more variety than you may realize from looking at a map.
As a local REALTOR® serving communities throughout Louisiana, I help relocating buyers understand those options and begin narrowing their search before they arrive.
You don't need to know exactly where you want to live yet.
That's what this guide is for.
Where Should You Live in Shreveport-Bossier?
There isn't one “best” area for everyone moving to Shreveport-Bossier. Different communities offer different combinations of housing, commute, convenience, lot size, amenities and lifestyle.
Where you'll work and what you want from your home should help determine where you begin looking.
Here are several areas worth exploring.
❋ Shreveport
Shreveport gives you one of the broadest ranges of housing options in the area.
Depending on where you look, you'll find historic homes, established neighborhoods, gated communities, golf-course properties, newer development, condos, waterfront homes and properties with additional land.
Central Shreveport can provide convenient access to downtown and the medical corridor, while southeast and south Shreveport offer another mix of established and newer residential options.
Shreveport isn't one single housing market or lifestyle—which is exactly why I recommend narrowing your search beyond simply typing “homes in Shreveport.”
❋ Haughton | East Bossier Parish
Haughton expands your search east of Bossier City.
Depending on what you're looking for, you may find established neighborhoods, newer construction, larger properties and acreage outside the core Shreveport-Bossier area.
For buyers who don't need to be in the center of the metro every day, expanding the search can sometimes uncover completely different property options.
❋ South Highlands | Central Shreveport
If mature trees, established streets and homes with architectural character appeal to you, South Highlands and surrounding parts of central Shreveport are worth exploring.
This part of the city can also provide convenient access to Line Avenue, downtown, the Kings Highway medical corridor and other central Shreveport destinations.
Properties can vary considerably from one street to another, so I recommend evaluating individual homes and locations rather than making assumptions based solely on the neighborhood name.
❋ North Bossier | Benton
Continue north and your options expand again.
North Bossier contains significant residential development and numerous subdivisions, while Benton can offer everything from neighborhood homes and newer construction to larger lots and acreage depending on the property.
If you're working in Shreveport, commute becomes particularly important here.
Two homes that both look “close enough” on a map may create very different daily routines.
❋ Southeast | South Shreveport
If you're looking for a more residential or suburban setting while remaining in Shreveport, expand your search southeast and south.
The Youree Drive and East 70th Street corridors provide access to shopping, restaurants, healthcare and everyday services, while areas farther south offer additional residential development, gated communities and newer housing depending on the location.
The farther south you go, the more important it becomes to compare the home you want against your actual commute.
❋ Bossier City
Across the Red River, Bossier City offers another wide range of residential options.
Bossier provides convenient access to Barksdale Air Force Base, major retail and restaurant corridors, entertainment and routes connecting you back into Shreveport.
You'll find everything from established neighborhoods to newer subdivisions depending on where you search.
North and South Bossier can also feel very different, which is why I recommend comparing actual properties, commute routes and daily-life priorities rather than simply searching “homes in Bossier City.”
Moving to Shreveport-Bossier? Start Before You Arrive
You don't necessarily need to choose a house months before your move.
You do want to begin understanding the area before you arrive.
Starting early gives us time to narrow down:
• Your comfortable housing budget
• Where you'll be working
• Your preferred commute
• Shreveport versus Bossier City
• Central versus suburban locations
• Established versus newer housing
• Neighborhood versus acreage
• Gated community preferences
• Home, condo or townhome options
• HOA preferences
• Flood-zone and insurance considerations
• Your expected move date
• The type of lifestyle you're actually looking for
By the time you're ready to seriously shop, you can already have a much clearer picture of where—and what—you should be looking for.
My Local Connection to Shreveport–Bossier
Hi, I'm Breela Johns, a local REALTOR® serving communities throughout Louisiana.
Moving somewhere you've never lived means trying to make a major housing decision while learning an entirely new area at the same time.
My job is to make that process easier.
Tell me when you're arriving, what you're hoping to find and what matters most to you. I can help you begin narrowing the areas and properties that make sense for your move before you arrive.Shreveport or Bossier City?
This is one of the most common questions people have when relocating here.
And I wouldn't choose based on someone simply telling you that one is “better.”
The two cities sit across the Red River from one another and function as one connected metro area, but your housing options and commute can vary considerably depending on the specific location.
Shreveport generally gives you a broader mix of historic neighborhoods, established communities, medical and downtown access, waterfront opportunities and housing styles.
Bossier City gives you another mix of established and newer housing, convenient access to Barksdale Air Force Base and continued residential growth as you move north toward Benton.
The better question isn't:
“Should I live in Shreveport or Bossier?”
It's:
“Which specific location gives me the best combination of home, commute, budget and lifestyle?”
That's what we should figure out.
Moving Here for Work?
Where you'll be working should influence where you look.
Shreveport-Bossier serves as a regional employment center for healthcare, defense, education, manufacturing, logistics, government and other industries.
Someone stationed at Barksdale Air Force Base may need a completely different home-search strategy from someone working around LSU Health, downtown Shreveport, North Bossier or one of the area's industrial corridors.
That's why one of my first questions is simple:
Where will you be working?
Then we work backward from there.
If you're relocating specifically for the military or medical training, I've also created more detailed guides for those moves.

That's completely fine.
You don't need to know which neighborhood you want, which side of the river makes sense or exactly what your next home should look like before reaching out.
That's what we'll figure out.
